2017 SunShot Innovators Program

EST The U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) seeks applications for the newly offered SunShot Innovators Program. This award funds recent Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate graduates to examine innovative solutions to the challenges utilities, energy service providers, and public utilities commissions face as they adapt to a system with increasing levels of solar and other distributed energy resources. Innovators selected for the program conduct hands-on, practical research and development on-site at a utility, energy service provider, or PUC host institution.

Benefits include:

  • Yearly stipend ranging from $40,000 - $70,000+ based on academic level
  • Research allowance of $10,000
  • Health insurance
  • Possible relocation travel up to $5,000


  • Must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Must be 18 years old by May 1, 2017
  • Must have earned Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degree in past 3 years


Distributed Sun: Junior Civil Engineer Internship

Distributed Sun (DSUN) is seeking an enthusiastic junior Civil Engineer with university coursework in civil engineering, geographic information systems (GIS), computer-aided design (CAD), and other related subjects to site selection, solar engineering, and electrical construction. The candidate will be working to assess the viability of infrastructure projects and provide guidance for quality execution of construction projects. The right candidate will be well organized, a team player, and able to learn independently and on the job. A strong applicant will be able to communicate their strengths, their weaknesses, and the method by which they will improve over the duration of the internship. Distributed Sun is looking for a part-time intern on Tuesdays and Thursdays with the possibility to extend the position to full-time.

PTD Module & Integration Device Yield Engineer - JR0001698

Description: PTD Module Engineers are responsible for leading scientific research and enabling manufacture of innovative device architectures coupled with the realization of these architectures. Responsibilities include designing, executing and analyzing experiments necessary to meet engineering specifications for their process. A Module Engineer participates in the development of intellectual property and the development of the equipment necessary to exploit understanding gained in research (in collaboration with equipment suppliers.) The Engineer must work effectively with the equipment supplier to identify shortcomings, propose and evaluate hardware modification to mitigate issues and operate the manufacturing line in order to integrate the many individual steps necessary for the manufacture of complex microprocessors. Module Engineers are also responsible for overseeing in-situ ramp to manufacturing volumes to demonstrate that the technology meets requirements while simultaneously transferring the technology to counterparts in manufacturing via 'Copy Exactly!' methodology. Module ownership includes the install and qualification of manufacturing capacity at the development site and audit installation/qualification and supervision of first full loop at the production site. Must hold a PhD. 

QualificationsYou must possess a minimum of a Ph.D. degree majoring in Physics, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.

Position Requirements:
  - Program support and stakeholder management: this individual will need to assist in technical writing, presentations, meetings with management, and interfacing with external stakeholders.
  - Data Analysis: inputting raw data from numerous sources, documentation and data entry, correct storage and dissemination of data to individuals among the program, and periodic reporting on data trends to management and other stakeholders.
  - Experience with tracking project actions and budgets, as well as, compiling advance spreadsheets.
  - A Bachelor’s Degree and 3-7 years of related experience in program support, analyst, or similar business support roles.
  - Persons must have knowledge of / experience with hydrogen and/or fuel cells.

Suncycle: Field and Test Technician (Part-time)

Suncycle USA is located in Frederick, MD and a sister company of Suncycle GmbH out of Hamburg, Germany. Suncycle specializes in solar power system diagnostics, operations, maintenance, repair and recycling.
Due to business growth, we are seeking a part-time technician to assist with solar system electrical field testing and general business support.

General duties:
- Assist with mechanical disassembly and reassembly of solar modules & structures
- Assist with electrical circuit, solar module and system power measurements
- Assist with the development of custom measurement and testing techniques
- Assist with warehousing and product storage, unpacking and packing of solar modules, shipping and receiving
- Data gathering, and writing reports

- 1 year experience with basic mechanical and electrical circuits
- Experience with solar power system installation, operation and maintenance
- Training available

- Occasional travel to other states and regional job sites
- Testing will require occasional late afternoons and nights for diagnostic testing
- Safe work practices

Pay: $15 to $20 per hour, part-time
