Project Title: Microwave Generation for Fusion Applications

Principle Investigator(s): Thomas Antonsen (ECE, Physics, IREAP), Gregory Nusinovich (IREAP), Victor Granatstein (ECE, IREAP)

Abstract: The UMD research team is contributing to national effort in the development of high power gyrotrons for heating confined plasmas to fusion temperatures. Gyrotrons produce coherent electromagnetic radiation in the frequency range 100-200 GHz, at power levels .5 - 1.5 MW, and for pulse lengths that last up to tens of seconds. The US effort consists of the Maryland team, which is responsible for theory and numerical modeling, the MIT team, which is responsible for experimental prototyping and concept exploration, and CPI, an industrial partner, which is responsible for construction of the devices. The Maryland effort has focused on the development of a simulation code MAGY (Maryland Gyrotron) that is used by MIT and CPI for the design and optimization of all gyrotrons produced in the US for the last 15 years.
