Thermoelectrics & Waste Heat Recovery
Improving efficiency / reducing fuel consumption in many energy conversion processes can be accomplished by converting waste heat into useful work. This can be done on many scales through advanced thermoelectric materials and through advanced process development using novel heat-driven cycles for power and/or refrigeration. UMERC and CEEE researchers are advancing thermoelectric materials that will enable higher efficiencies of converting waste-heat directly to electric power for applications in buildings and portable power. For distributed power applications, waste heat recovery for heating and heat-driven cooling provides the potential for substantial reduction in energy consumption in buildings and industrial processes.
