Carbon Capture and Sequestration
The majority of electric power produced in the US is based on fossil fuels. To minimize the environmental impact UMD is developing carbon capture technology and processes to convert CO2 back to a usable fuel.
The safe sequestration of waste CO2 has received much attention as one potential means of reducing the amount of this gas in the atmosphere. UMERC researchers are examining the physics of sequestration through multiphase flow modeling, as well as biologic applications such as forest carbon sinks.
