Center for Multiscale Plasma Dynamics

Principal Investigator(s):

Abstract:

The Center for Multiscale Plasma Dynamics (jointly run by UMD and UCLA) is one of only two US DOE Fusion Science Centers. The CMPD mission is to extend established first-principles, microscopic, kinetic simulation techniques to problems that intrinsically involve the slow evolution of macroscopic variables, and to validate the simulations against experimental observations.

The Maryland component of the center is focused on the development and application of new algorithms for high performance computation in the areas of plasma turbulence and magnetic reconnection. Nearly all CMPD funding is dedicated to graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and young faculty, and the research projects reflect this long-term focus.

An annual Winter School for plasma physics is hosted by CMPD in January at UCLA. Detailed information is available at www.cscamm.umd.edu/cmpd/.
