Gibbons, Wu to Attend Shale-Gas Monetization Short Course and Workshop

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE) graduate students William Gibbons and Yiqing Wu, both advised by ChBE assistant professor Dongxia Liu, have received travel grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to attend the Short Course and Workshop on Shale-Gas Monetization, to be held March 26-28 in Montgomery, Texas.

The event, hosted by Texas A&M University’s Gas and Fuels Research Initiative and sponsored by the NSF and Shell, is designed to facilitate discussion of opportunities in shale gas production in the United States. The course will draw examples from Qatar’s experience in natural gas monetization, including its success in establishing gas-to-liquid and liquefied natural gas facilities, as well as related chemical and petrochemical supply chains. Experts from academia, government and industry will focus on topics including the emerging role of natural gas in the global market, evaluation of natural gas properties, opportunities for chemical engineers in the shale gas industry, energy efficiency, smart manufacturing, synthesis and optimization, supply chain strategies, computational tools, crisis management, and safety.

Gibbons and Wu will present posters at the workshop, titled “Electrospun nanofiber mats for cost-effective production of catalyst materials for natural gas upgrading/processing–lessons learned from Pd/Cu-CeO2 WGS catalysts,” and “Direct methane conversion over Mo loaded hierarchical meso-/microporous lamellar MFI and MWW zeolites,” respectively.
