Nominee for Energy Secretary a Boon for Research at the Nanoscale?

Physicist Ernest J Moniz, a professor of physics, director of an energy initiative and a lab for energy and environmental issues, has been tapped by President Barack Obama to head the U.S. Department of Energy when current secretary Steven Chu, also a physicist, steps down.

Moniz authored a forward to a 2010 book on nano research and energy, Nanotechnology for the Energy Challenge.

The American Institute of Physics’ bulletin of science policy cites cautious support for Moniz’ appointment by members of the body that will advise Congress’ vote, the Senate’s Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Roll Call says that support for his candidacy is muted.

Moniz’ academic background seems to indicate a further White House emphasis on research, even skeptics of the nomination say.

Moniz gave a talk at the Fall 2012 MRS meeting, citing research areas he saw as important for enabling energy technology development.
