Washington Post Cites Alumnus for Accomplishments at DOE

Steven Chalk (B.S. '83, chemical engineering) was featured as the Washington Post's "Federal Player of the Week" on November 16, 2009. Chalk, the Chief Operating Officer of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) at the Department of Energy (DOE), is responsible for managing many of the billions of dollars in stimulus funds issued to the DOE by Congress. The article profiles Chalk's career, as well as his past and current efforts to support and improve renewable energy solutions and energy conservation.

In the article, Chalk says the stimulus funds will provide the resources the DOE needs to make a substantial difference in the creation of "green jobs", the deployment solar and geothermal power technology, the retrofitting of existing homes to make them more energy-efficient, and the creation of new fuel- and energy-saving products. His team will be responsible for awarding the stimulus money to projects and ensuring they continue to run on-schedule.

At the beginning of his DOE career in the early 1990s, Chalk managed programs that were developing fuel cells, working to control automotive emissions, and producing tritium for use in nuclear energy generation. Over the past two decades he has been involved in a variety of high-profile projects and research, including the President's Hydrogen Fuel Initiative, the ENERGY STAR^® program, and the Solar America Initiative. Before becoming the COO of the EERE, he served as the its Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, and its Deputy Assistant Secretary for Renewable Energy. In 2008 he received a Science and Environment Service to America Medal for his management of clean energy, renewable energy, and energy efficiency projects.
