On August 14th, President Bush signed into law the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 (HR 4137) which included all provisions of the Higher Education Sustainability Act. A Higher Education Sustainability Grant Program will be established to offer grants to colleges and universities to establish sustainability research programs, curricula, and practices. The bill also establishes a national summit of higher education staff, federal employees, and business leaders to evaluate best practices for sustainability. The first federal environmental education grant-making program authorized in 18 years, HESA was endorsed by over 220 colleges and universities, higher education associations, NGOs and corporations. The provisions of this bill will provide the necessary stimulus for colleges and universities to continue to develop and implement sustainable policies, practices and curricula.
