Statement of energy interests and expertise: 

The energy-related activities at Dr. Yang’s Micro/Nanoscale Heat Transfer and Energy Conversion Laboratory are focused on two research thrust areas: development of advanced thermoelectric materials, and development of hybrid thermoelectric systems. Thermoelectric devices, which can turn waste heat energy into useful electrical energy, play an important role in a global sustainable energy solution.

In the field of thermoelectric materials, researchers at Dr. Yang’s lab are developing two-component nanocomposite materials with high thermoelectric figure-of-merit ZT that are amendable to large-scale production.

Dr. Yang’s group, in collaboration with Dr. Jackson’s group, is also investigating the integration of thermoelectric (TE) generators into solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anode exhaust combustors in order to extract additional power for higher system efficiency and to reduce start-up battery needs in portable SOFC power systems.
