Statement of energy interests and expertise:
The overall focus in our group is the development of new routes for synthesis of nano and microparticles as well as particle based materials. We mainly use aerosol based approaches, as scalability of these processes has been demonstrated, but we also are developing colloidal methods for nanoparticle synthesis.  Related to energy, our group focuses on process development for production of multicomponent oxide materials for fuel cells and high surface area materials for advanced solar energy conversion.  We have developed a combustion synthesis route for ceria based water gas shift catalysts for fuel reformation, important for enabling fuel cells to run on available liquid fuels.  We are extending this process to the production of solid oxide fuel cell anode materials,
and sorbents for sulfur removal.  In the area of solar energy conversion, we have produced high surface area titania films by gas phase pyrolysis and thermophoretic deposition.  We have studied the effects of high temperature annealing on film morphology, interconnection, and mechanical strength.  Our process is potentially scalable, with applications to dye sensitized solar cell architectures.
