Statement of energy interests and expertise:
My interests and expertise in advanced energy research include fuel cells, materials for advanced solar energy conversion, and bioprocesses for fuel production and processing. These areas of energy research have a common technical challenge in that these materials (polymers, biomaterials, nonpolymeric materials, etc.) need to be manufactured in large quantity at the most economical way. Laboratory explorations of materials and fuel processes will never be realized unless intricate engineering is combined with them. The MERC should distinguish itself from other similar research centers at other universities by focussing on making the materials and devices for real applications with commercial success, instead of doing something similar to what other research centers. The manufacturing of these materials require high-level knowledge and experience in chemcal reaction kinetics and reaction process systems design that will eventually lead to novel energy production technology.
