Statement of energy interests and expertise
The main thrust of Professor Kofinas' energy interests aims in the synthesis and characterization of novel polymer based systems for flexible nanostructured small-scale energy storage systems, such as batteries and capacitors. Emphasis is given on synthesizing well characterized polymer systems to help elucidate structure-property relationships.
Current problems of interest include the development of novel polymeric nanoscale polyelectrolyte flexible thin films based on the self-assembly of block copolymers. The ease of processing a polymer electrolyte would allow the production of thin film nanoscale self-assembled flexible batteries that could be wound into coils or processed as coatings and sheets. A solid polyelectrolyte based on the nanoscale self-assembly of block copolymers will provide energy storage devices for mobile electronics and small-scale propulsion systems, which are distributed over a large area substrate as freestanding flexible films or coatings.
