Statement of energy interests and expertise

Fuel Cell and Fuel Cell Systems: Prof. Jackson has established the Reacting Flow Laboratory, and in collaboration with colleagues in the Dept. of Chemistry, he co-directs the Center for Fuel Cell Research. His principal areas of research are in the areas of solid oxide fuel cells, hydrocarbon processing for fuel cell applications, PEM fuel cell system modeling, and catalyst development for electrochemical and other energy conversion systems.

Dr. Jackson also has some research in ultra-low emissions premixed combustion systems.  His work in solid oxide fuel cells includes the assessment of alternative materials for more robust fuel flexible SOFC architectures.  This work involves the development and experimental validation of detailed models for further system analysis and microstructure design.

Dr. Jackson also works closely with Ballard Power Systems to develop preferred catalytic reactor systems for integrating hydrocarbon fuel processors with H2-based PEM fuel cell systems.  This work is complemented by funadmenatal efforts in collaboration with Dr. Bryan Eichhorn in Chemistry to develop new bimetallic nano-architectured catalysts for tolerating reformate streams in PEM fuel cell anodes.
