Statement of energy interests and expertise

Steve Fetter has been a member of the School's faculty since 1988, serving as dean from 2005 to 2009. He is currently on leave as Assistant Director in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

His research interests include the potential of carbon-free energy sources--nuclear, solar, wind, biomass, and fossil fuels with carbon sequestration--to reduce global carbon emissions over the next 50 to 100 years.  He has particular interests in the future of nuclear energy systems, and I have written on the cost, safety, waste disposal, and nonproliferation impacts of various nuclear fuel-cycle alternatives.

Additional interests include nuclear arms control and nonproliferation, nuclear energy and effects of radiation, and climate change and carbon-free energy supply.

Dr. Fetter has been an advisor to several government agencies, scientific organizations, and nongovernmental organizations, and has held visiting positions at Stanford, Harvard, and MIT. He received a Ph.D. in energy and resources from the University of California, Berkeley, and an S.B. in physics from MIT.
