Poplar Nitrogen Cycling and Storage: Advancing Sustainable Biomass Production

Presented by Gary Coleman
Associate Professor, Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture
University of Maryland

Efficient use of nutrients is a critical component of efficient, high yielding and sustainable biomass production. Nitrogen (N) is a major plant nutrient and limited availability significantly affects productivity and biomass yield. Because of the importance of N to plant productivity, high nitrogen use efficiency, efficient nutrient recycling and optimal nutrient remobilization have been identified as traits that could improve the yield, quality and sustainability of biomass crops. A number of factors now make it possible to transform our knowledge of how N storage and cycling is regulated in poplar. The availability of genomic resources for poplar including the annotated genome sequence, commercially available DNA microarrays and extensive EST databases facilitates the application of genomic, proteomic, and metabolic flux approaches towards understanding N storage and cycling in poplar. In this seminar, I will present and overview of N storage and cycling in poplar and present a discussion of goals and objectives of the recently funded NSF Plant Genome project focused on poplar N cycling and storage.
